Savannah : Artist Shelf Takeover : Debra Malschick

Our goal is to build community by sharing our space through art & visual projects of our community members in our shops.

Join us during Starland First Friday on May 3rd from 4 PM - 7 PM for an Artist Shelf Takeover with Debra Malschick.

Art Statement:

I am a painter and am inspired by looking closely at nature. I enjoy using color but

often depict my subject (plants and flowers) using black and white. By leaving out color

(a seductive element) people can see the beauty and romance of the structure rhythm

and design of each form.

I hope that the work gives people an alternative way of enjoying the beauty of flowers

and plants.

Process and materials:

Line is used to create a singular conceptual vision inspired by direct observation.

Beginning with gesture leads to the expression of the rhythm movement and flow of the

forms. Many of the works here are drawn with ink and dip pen or with a brush dipped in

ink.

The mylar pieces are drawn on both sides of the translucent film and meant to be

viewed from either side of the surface. Seen from a distance they are abstract and fluid

and seen for the beauty and layering of the lines. Light filtering into the drawing

becomes a factor. The spontaneous build of lines allows to viewer to change focus.

Advancing closer the flowers are more evident.

Bio: Debra Malschick is an artist living in Savannah and teaching drawing at SCAD.

The forms and patterns in nature feature prominently in the paintings and drawings.

Debra Malschick’s work is in public and private collections around the world, has

been exhibited internationally, published as limited-edition prints, and licensed for use in

the entertainment industry. Debra has received publication awards, been included in a

book on contemporary painting and received a One Percent for the Arts Commission in

Los Angeles among other honors.

Northern Liberties : Artist Shelf Takeover + Make Your Own Tarot Card Workshop w/ Lara Bros

Our goal is to build community by sharing our space through the art and visual projects of our community members in our shops.

Join us on Friday, May 3rd from 5-8 PM in our NoLibs shop for our Artist Shelf Takeover series with Lara Bros!

Come explore and shop Lara’s work—while surrounded by plants—and meet the artist herself.

During her Artist Shelf Takeover, participate in a Make-Your-Own Tarot Card Workshop— led by Lara!

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Lara Bros (she/hers) is a queer visual artist living and working in Philadelphia. Her body of work resides mainly in collage, and occasionally textile arts. Her work focuses on piecing together images and text to convey complex feelings and experiences that often escape description. She explores themes of memory, nostalgia, and how vulnerability (or fear of vulnerability) informs our perspectives, using her own and shared experiences. By piecing together different mediums, she believes that observers are enticed to not just be viewers, and to absorb the telling of these experiences. To not just hold the familiarity of shared experiences, but to participate in the telling and preservation of a story by lending their own perspectives and experiences. Lara practices art in the spirit of abolition, believing that creative practices provide us with the imagination and different modes of thinking that we need to radically re-imagine our society and relationships with one another.

Her current pieces explore elusive practices of spirituality and divinity that have been coded feminine, such as tarot reading and candle magick. Her hope is that the imagery she creates resonates with feelings and experiences that invoke nostalgia or difficult to capture feelings, and encourage different ways of participating with art practices. She has a BA in Art History from Drexel University, and lives in Queen Village with her cat, Fern, and her chosen family.

Northern Liberties : Intuitive Painting with BeeReallyChanneling

Join us on Saturday, May 18th from 6-8PM for Intuitive Painting with BeeReallyChanneling!

We are honored to host BeeReallyChanneling for this unique experience at our shop. Bee has been leading this workshop many times before at all sorts of locations across NJ & PA and now we’re bringing it to STUMP for the first time!

EVENT DETAILS FROM BEE:

Introducing an Intuitive Painting experience to meet deeper with our inner selves, inner child and each other! In this space together, you’ll be guided through meditation and breath work to calm the nervous system and bring awareness to the body, while next being guided through an intuitive painting experience, where the paint brush will flow onto the canvas.

WHAT IS INTUITIVE PAINTING?

  • Intuitive painting is about letting go of fear or expectations. It’s to allow your painting to evolve based on your heart callings, visions, and play.

  • That includes the happy accidents and the messes! And letting each brush stroke prompt the next based on your own internal guidance - WITHOUT a plan!

Get ready to Express, Relax, and Strengthen connection to your Intuition and Release!

WORKSHOP OFFERINGS INCLUDE:

  • ️Meditation

  • ️11x14 canvas and paints

  • ️Guided painting experience

  • ️Goodie Bag

  • ️House made Tea

Now at first glance, you might ask - How is this “Intuitive Painting” supposed to BENEFIT ME? and how is it different from “regular” painting️

Here are some MAJOR benefits from this practice & the why:

  • 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌: In a very structured & rigid society we get an opportunity to break “rules”, connect with our playful spirit & exercise freedom. We paint how we FEEL, using what we want - brushes, fingers OR flowers

  • 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: In this practice, there is no “end goal” or “preconcieved” ideas! We listen to our internal callings for color, style, patterns & method of application.

  • 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚: As we listen & feel into what’s going on inside, we expand our awareness to the things we may normally ignore

  • 𝑾𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝑮𝑹𝑨𝑪𝑬: There are no mistakes in intuitive painting. No rules. No standards or expectations to meet. We learn to love whatever comes up as an expression of self

  • 𝑾𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆: while emotions, energy, & experience can get caught in the body - this form of expression allows us to 𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒆 those energies from inside to 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 of ourselves

  • 𝑾𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆: For healing, for friendship, for expression, for self-care, for community, for coping, for FUN, for getting it all out, for truth, for forgiveness, compassion, & love

Grab a friend and enjoy an evening catered to embracing your intuition and inner artist!

Our goal is to build community by sharing our space through art & visual projects of our community members in our shops.

Join us Saturday, June 1st, from 4:00-6:00pm, to meet Ivy Egger, the next artist in our Artist Shelf Takeover Series.

Additional parking can be found across the street, behind Posh Hair Salon

About the Artist

Beginning her mosaics with a simple acrylic or gouache painting provides Ivy with a foundation. Working with mosaics gives her the chance to take broken pieces of glass and make them into a new creation. Since mosaics require a sturdy surface, she creates them on canvas panels or cradled wood panels.   Contrary to traditional mosaic artwork, she uses glue to adhere the beads, pieces of glass, mica, and other materials to the panels, which allows the materials to lend extra sparkle to her mosaics.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

“I find inspiration in the elements of age, decay and that which is worn. Structures in despair, oxidized metals, peeling paint and graffiti, and all that is tattered and torn. All that nature has eroded and society itself has condemned.

My work has included vast subject matter and a diverse use of mediums. When working in abstract form I feel a greater sense of freedom, it allows for endless inspiration and has no boundaries. With a canvas, inspiration, and various mixed media, keeping an emphasis on experimenting with new ideas, I take a step back from reality and put myself in a spiritual state and let art create itself. This enables me to explore color, texture, and surface more deeply. Beyond the use of materials and techniques, I strive to generate beauty and language while invoking a sense of emotion in which the viewer can identify. The process of painting, creating something out of nothing fills my spirit with accomplishment. I thank God for my artistic journey and all who enable me to create.

The work of Maureen Bowie Studio will continue to be on display and for sale until Friday, April 12th.
