Tell us about your first houseplant.

My first plant that was really my own was a cactus. Having something so different from the plants you can find in Ohio really appealed to me. That’s something really great about houseplants—you can bring elements from all over the world right into your living room.

What’s your favorite story about a plant in your collection?

Once, I bought a Ponytail Palm, and the tiniest garden snail had hitched a ride in the pot. It ended up living its life out in that plant and seemed pretty happy with that decision.

Any advice for new plant owners?

Buy the plant! If you already did, enjoy it. Most of them are way more low-maintenance than you think, and some even thrive on neglect. So just enjoy looking at it and don’t fret about needing to tend to it all the time. You’ve got this. Oh, and once you start, you often can’t stop. So get ready to have more plants than you can count before long!

Which planter is your favorite planter in your collection and why?

Not your typical planter, this old bike wheel came from an antique shop, and after I stripped the tube off and shined it up, it makes the perfect place for my air plants to hang.

Why should everyone have a houseplant?

I’m an environmental educator and nature photographer, and time spent outdoors is where I’m the happiest. I think everyone should have a houseplant because they bring the same calming elements you experience from the outdoors into your everyday space. One or two plants require little effort for a lot of joy in return.

What has having plants taught you?

Having plants is like having living artwork in your home that is often changing. It has inspired me in my photography, and I always have live-in models ready.

If you took a Buzzfeed quiz- which house plant would it say you are, and why? Or, if you had to choose a plant to represent you which would it be?

English Ivy! I’m an easy going, adaptable person, and I’ll find a way around obstacles when I need to get something done.
