Better With Plants | Egan

Who or what got you into house plants?

A little bit my mom, a little bit STUMP! My mom has always had plants in her house, and my favorite one was this massive rubber tree that she took care of. It didn’t make the move to Ohio with us, which made me pretty sad. I always wanted to take care of plants, though, and once I wandered into STUMP about four years ago, the rest has been history. It really sparked this interest for me, and houseplants are now my all-time favorite hobby, and I feel like I’m always learning more.

Which planter is your favorite planter in your colllection and why?
My large zigzag planter that I have my Hoya carnosa in. It’s made by some of my favorite ceramicists, A Question of Eagles. The size is perfect for a Hoya to live in long-term, as they usually have shallow roots, and the shape of the planter is just so unique too!

Which plant is your favorite plant in your collection and why?

My Sansevieria ‘Cleopatra!’ I’ve been crazy for all the different kinds of snake plants lately, and the ‘Cleopatra’ is a Thai hybrid that’s pretty hard to come by, and the colors and markings are absolutely gorgeous. I had wanted one for such a long time, and I was thrilled to finally have the chance to get one this past summer.

What does your plant care routine look like?

I have about 50 or so plants in my collection, so I’m usually watering in the morning most days. I try to concentrate most of my watering on Saturdays and Sundays when I have the most free time in the mornings. Other than that, I just let them do their thing. During the spring and summer months, I’ll feed them with fertilizer—most of the plants I have aren’t heavy feeders, so I’m not even fertilizing that much! I think one of the most important parts of selecting a plant besides knowing what lighting you have is to know what kind of care you’re capable of personally, and all of mine are good matches for me.

Why should everyone have a house plant?

Spaces are so sterile without them! I’m a huge proponent of the idea that there truly is a plant for everyone. Most of us live in cities and might not be surrounded by nature, and plants are an amazing way to rekindle that connection with nature. Plants aren’t going to be communicative in the same way an animal or child might, but once you learn their way of communicating with us, it is so rewarding to be able to care for them.
