Savannah : Artist Shelf Takeover : Debra Malschick

Our goal is to build community by sharing our space through art & visual projects of our community members in our shops.

Join us during Starland First Friday on May 3rd from 4 PM - 7 PM for an Artist Shelf Takeover with Debra Malschick.

Art Statement:

I am a painter and am inspired by looking closely at nature. I enjoy using color but

often depict my subject (plants and flowers) using black and white. By leaving out color

(a seductive element) people can see the beauty and romance of the structure rhythm

and design of each form.

I hope that the work gives people an alternative way of enjoying the beauty of flowers

and plants.

Process and materials:

Line is used to create a singular conceptual vision inspired by direct observation.

Beginning with gesture leads to the expression of the rhythm movement and flow of the

forms. Many of the works here are drawn with ink and dip pen or with a brush dipped in

ink.

The mylar pieces are drawn on both sides of the translucent film and meant to be

viewed from either side of the surface. Seen from a distance they are abstract and fluid

and seen for the beauty and layering of the lines. Light filtering into the drawing

becomes a factor. The spontaneous build of lines allows to viewer to change focus.

Advancing closer the flowers are more evident.

Bio: Debra Malschick is an artist living in Savannah and teaching drawing at SCAD.

The forms and patterns in nature feature prominently in the paintings and drawings.

Debra Malschick’s work is in public and private collections around the world, has

been exhibited internationally, published as limited-edition prints, and licensed for use in

the entertainment industry. Debra has received publication awards, been included in a

book on contemporary painting and received a One Percent for the Arts Commission in

Los Angeles among other honors.

Savannah : Artist Shelf Takeover : The Dear Diary Zine Collective

Our goal is to build community by sharing our space through art & visual projects of our community members in our shops.

Join us Thursday January 25th, from 5-8pm, to meet Darriea Clark during The Dear Diary Zine Collective Artist Shelf Takeover.

The Dear Diary Zine Collective started when founder Darriea Clark combined two of her favorite interests: journaling and publishing. As a branch of her company Unblushing Media, the collective is an avenue for people to share their stories, build community, and see themselves in print. The group provides zine and journaling resources, hosts online and in-person events, and publishes a print collection called Dear Diary.

Touted as “a public sharing of private thoughts,” Dear Diary Issue 01 is a collection of diary entries from 27 contributors, 15 of whom are from Savannah. Through this work, writers, illustrators, and memory keepers share their experiences with love, loss, desire, frustration, and happiness. With entries as recent as December 2023 and as dated as July 1999, the book captures timestamps from varying life stages in 72 colorful and emotional pages.

A high school freshman details the worst day ever. “I got a C on my math quiz.” She continues, “Had a pep ralley and my fucking freshmen class was so immature.” An unemployed mom copes with the anxieties of caring for her children. “I need to figure something out..... Stripping!!” A grieving sister reflects on growing up in South Central LA. “Death came for you the way death comes for most of us hood kids…” A lover looks forward to cohabitating with her partner. “I want it. All of him. Every day, every way.”

“When we’re talking to our diaries, we’re talking to ourselves, so we have this line of communication that’s no longer performative,” Clark says. “I didn’t ask for polished, prepared pieces, because I want to remove the mask we put on for others. This zine peeks into the secret thoughts of the everyday person, allowing readers to find relatability in the words.”

About Coqui Cookies & Treats : A home based bakery for life's simple moments.

My name is Laura M. Morales. Since I was very young, I loved being in the kitchen. I remember propping myself up on a chair -so I could reach the countertops- to help prepare family meals. Helping with desserts was always my favorite part! By the time I could reach the countertops, I was coming up with my own recipes and giving them out at school.
After college, I realized I wanted to pursue baking as a career and work towards having my own business. After working at a local bakery for a few years and sharpening my skills with my fellow baker friends, I took the leap in creating Coqui Cookies. Sharing my baked goods, and my culture with the Savannah community fills me with joy every day.

🇵🇷 Why the name “Coqui” Cookies?
As a young girl raised in Puerto Rico, I grew up with the sound of Coqui -pronounced: kow•kee. These little frogs could produce a unique and tremendous sound which would be the Puerto Rican equivalent to Cicadas in the South. It wasn't until I moved to Georgia that I came to miss those little Coqui frogs that would keep me up at night. I realized they helped define my heritage.
Coqui Cookies combines two key elements of who I am.

Savannah : Artist Shelf Takeover with Emma Leigh Art Studio and Dana Steadman

Our goal is to build community by sharing our space through art & visual projects of our community members in our shops.

Join us for a wonderful holiday evening in the shop, December 8th from 4-8 PM! Meet local artists, Emma Leigh and Dana Steadman during our Artist Shelf Takeover Series.

About Emma Leigh Art Studio: “My name is Emma Patterson and I am a watercolor artist based in Savannah, GA.  My degree is in Marine Sciences from Savannah State University, but somewhere along the way I also found a love for watercolor painting. Creating art has been the best way for me to manage stress and navigate life changes. Much of my art is inspired by finding peace in the things I love and have inspired me the most. My hope is that my paintings might bring a sense of joy and peace to others!”

Artist’s Statement for Dana Steadman

“My background in art started at an early age, picking up watercolor painting at about the age of 12. My training in art growing up in Massachusetts was fairly limited, consisting of some encouragement from teachers in school. But rather than pursue a career in art, I graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Architecture. Following a move to Pittsburgh, I worked as an Architect for over 40 years. In 1997, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) held an exhibit titled “Art by Architects,” which I entered. My painting was published on the cover of the AIA Pittsburgh Chapter magazine, “Columns,” and my second career was started.

My interest in watercolors continued, and I took a few classes and workshops from several well-known Pittsburgh artists such as Joe Eiser, Ron Thurston, Kathleen Zimbicki and Frank Webb. I joined the North Hills Art Center and the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society, serving as a Board member for both. Also I am a past member of the Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Sewickley, PA, and the Chautauqua County Society of Artists in NY.

The influence of my architectural training shows in my work, as most of my paintings focus on the built environment, with the inclusion of buildings, boats, trains and other manmade structures. I work strictly in traditional transparent watercolor on 100% cotton watercolor paper. Mostly I work from photographs I have taken while traveling, although occasionally I do work directly from life.

After retirement, I relocated to Savannah, to be with my family and to stay active in the vibrant art scene here. There is a lot of history and architecture in Savannah, which I like to try to capture on

paper. I belong to the Savannah Art Association and Arts on the Coast organizations, and regularly enter their exhibits. Plus I have entered several local outdoor shows such as Savannah Local Artists Market {SLAM}, Tybee Island Tour De Art, and the recent Gordonston Art Fair and Isle of Hope Arts and Music Festival.

My Paintings have won numerous awards at various shows, such as first place two years in a row at Chautauqua County Art in the Park, Mayville, NY, and others at the North Hills Art Center, Pittsburgh, PA shows over the years. My work has been featured in galleries such as the Sewickley Gallery and Frame Shop, Sewickley, PA, Kada Gallery and Relish in Erie, PA, Le Poire in Crafton, PA, as well as the Savannah Art Association Airport Gallery and Arts on the Coast exhibit at Photopoint Gallery in Richmond Hill, GA.

I have had mentions and features in articles in magazines and newspapers, and would like to expand my presence in Savannah. More recently my work is hanging in the Bobby Bagley Fine Art Studio in the Art Market in City Market in downtown Savannah.”

While Sue leads you through a chakra meditation, gentle yoga class, and White Lights, Chrissy will play chakra crystal bowls and a variety of other instruments to what’s needed in the room.

Your physical practice combined with Sound Massage will serve to clear, cleanse and balance all the energetic centers of your body, and clear and balance your mind. This journey will leave you feeling deeply rested and renewed.

Yoga students of all ages and levels welcome!
